Kachemak Bay State Park sits just across the water from Homer, but you can’t drive there. A short water taxi ride from the harbor is the only way in, which keeps it every bit as wild as places twice as remote. This excursion pairs sea kayaking through calm, wildlife-rich coves with a hike to Grewingk Glacier Lake, where icebergs drift free from the glacier’s face. It’s a full day, but an easy one, no experience necessary, just a willingness to get out on the water.
The park is boat- or plane-access only, about a 30-minute ride from Homer's harbor. No roads reach it, which is exactly what keeps the coves and trails this quiet.
Paddle calm, sheltered water past kelp beds and rocky shoreline, no prior kayaking experience needed. Guides handle instruction and gear before you launch.
An easy-to-moderate trail through old-growth forest opens onto a lake dotted with icebergs calved from Grewingk Glacier, with the ice face visible up-valley.
Watch for sea otters and harbor seals in the coves, and keep an eye out near Gull Island, home to thousands of nesting puffins, murres, and kittiwakes.
Wear layers you can shed and add back as coves and open water can feel very different in temperature within the same day.
Bring waterproof gear or a dry bag; some spray is normal during the kayak portion.
The full hike-and-kayak combo is a full day (roughly 8am–5/6pm), so pace yourself and eat before you go.
Book ahead in peak summer as water taxi slots and guided kayak spots fill quickly in July and August.
Comfortable, broken-in hiking shoes matter more than technical gear since the trail is easy-to-moderate, not technical.
