Your trip starts on the water — a 45- to 75-minute float plane flight from Homer straight into bear country. No roads reach Katmai, which is part of what keeps it wild.

Wear neutral, non-scented colors as bright colors and strong scents (perfume, scented sunscreen) aren’t recommended in bear country.
Bring layers even in July. Weather at Katmai shifts fast, and platforms offer little shelter from wind or rain.
Pack a zoom lens or binoculars, platform rules keep a respectful distance from the bears, so a phone camera won’t get you close-up shots.
