Katmai Bear Viewing: Brooks Falls Up Close

Katmai Bear Viewing: Brooks Falls Up Close

There’s no road to Katmai — you get there by float plane, lifting off from Homer and landing where brown bears outnumber people. At Brooks Falls, you’ll watch bears fish salmon straight out of the air mid-leap, from a raised platform built for exactly this. A ranger briefs you on bear safety before you ever leave the dock, so by the time you’re standing at the falls, you know exactly what to expect.

Highlights

Float plane flight from Homer

Your trip starts on the water — a 45- to 75-minute float plane flight from Homer straight into bear country. No roads reach Katmai, which is part of what keeps it wild.

Ranger-led safety orientation

Before you reach the platforms, a park ranger walks you through bear etiquette and safety. It's quick, direct, and exactly what turns nerves into confidence.

Brooks Falls bear viewing platform

Watch brown bears catch salmon mid-leap from a raised, secure platform just above the falls. July is peak season so expect several bears fishing at once.

Salmon run wildlife viewing

Beyond the falls, watch bears fish the calmer river stretches and spot cubs learning to fish alongside their mothers. Every visit looks a little different.

Tips for the Adventure

Wear neutral, non-scented colors as bright colors and strong scents (perfume, scented sunscreen) aren’t recommended in bear country.
Bring layers even in July. Weather at Katmai shifts fast, and platforms offer little shelter from wind or rain.
Pack a zoom lens or binoculars, platform rules keep a respectful distance from the bears, so a phone camera won’t get you close-up shots.
Book well ahead for July dates. Peak salmon-run season fills up months in advance.
Expect to queue. Platforms operate on a rotation system during busy periods, so patience is part of the experience.
